Daily Appraisal

One car a day. Three guesses at what it brings wholesale, three at what it should be priced at retail. A wrong guess gets you an arrow: higher or lower.

Wholesale
What does it bring in the lane?
Retail
What should it be priced at on the lot?

Finish both rounds to see the comps and how we priced this car.

    How to play

    • Wholesale first. What would this exact car bring in the auction lane, or what would you give for it on a trade? Condition grade, notes and history all count.
    • Then retail. What should it be priced at on an independent lot in that market after normal recon? You'll see the wholesale answer before you guess.
    • Within 5% is a hit. A hit on your first guess is worth 50 points, second 30, third 15, per round. Yellow means within 15%; red means way off.
    • Share without spoilers. Your result copies as colored squares, so you can post it in the group chat without giving away the number.

    Common questions

Where do the answers come from?▾
Each day we research the car against live dealer listings in the named market for the retail number, and against published trade-in values and public auction results for the wholesale number. Then we adjust for this car's miles, condition and history. Once you finish, the listings and references we used are linked under the game so you can check our work.
Is this a real car for sale?▾
No. Each day's car is a realistic scenario: a common independent-lot model with believable miles, condition and history. The photo shows the same model generation, credited to its photographer. The values are a market estimate on the day it was built. Your market, and the auction on a given day, will differ.
What's the difference between wholesale and retail value?▾
Wholesale is what a dealer pays: the auction hammer price or a trade-in allowance. Retail is what the car is priced at on the lot. The gap between them has to cover auction fees, transport, reconditioning, holding cost and your gross. Run the numbers on a real unit with the wholesale vs. retail calculator or the auction profit calculator.
What does the condition grade mean?▾
It's the 1-to-5 scale auctions use on condition reports: roughly 4 and up is clean, 3 is average wear for its age, and under 3 needs real recon. Our guide to condition report red flags covers what the notes are telling you.
